Start with the job to be done
Name the task with a direct verb and make the desired outcome concrete. “Summarize these interviews for a product team” gives an AI system a better starting point than “help with research.”
Add the context that changes the answer
Include the audience, source material, business rules, time period, and facts that shape a good response. Leave out noise: a focused prompt is easier to inspect, test, and improve.
Describe the output before asking for it
State the format, tone, length, and decision criteria. You might ask for an executive summary, a comparison table, a JSON object, or a three-part outline. A visible output shape reduces ambiguity.
Treat prompting as an iteration loop
Review the response, identify what was missing or vague, update the prompt, and test again. Keeping the prompt and accepted result together makes the next iteration faster and helps teams learn from one another.
